The drivers in the new Gate are not shielded!
The review by K+T 3/2006: "Due to the targeted market of the Gate 5.1 we had some expectation s when we sat down in our listening room. We quickly found out that the GATE 5.1 didn't disappoint. Initially driven without a subwoofer the Gate 5.1 produced a very direct, open and clear sound. Nothing was blurred or glossed over, instead every detail was reproduced with commitment. Even though this speaker can get quite loud, the tuning of the speaker made sure that we didn't miss anything at lower volumes. The sound was always pleasant - no hiss from the tweeter, no bass boom. In fact the bass was always dry and with kick, albeit a bit subdued. A wall behind the speaker can do wonders. In this case the bass might be just enough, depending on music and preferences. After a few songs we added subwoofer anyway. We immediately noticed the enormous reserves of the sub since the volume of the active module was turned up only slightly. Instead of the expected big bang we experienced an airy and subtle performance. Straight away trio formed an integrated whole. The sub took on a subordinate role to ensure a well balanced sound and reproduced all types of bass, whether short or long, loud or soft with musicality. Just the lowest octave needed some persuasion. Using the bass reflex version solves the problem, turning a group of Gates into an absolute home cinema performer. The Gate 5.1 is an excellent small speaker not only considering the price, but also in absolute standards, suitable for softer and louder material and, therefore, will win the hearts of all those who like a crisp and vivid sound. The outrageously low price is another reason to seriously consider buying a pair."
The Gate 5.1 is a typical design by Harald Hecken: he doesn't like complicated crossovers. He rather uses excellent drivers supplemented by simple crossovers. High efficiency and outstanding dynamics are also part of his design principle.
in 8/2007 it has been the latest version is equipped with midrange and bass driver like Newtronics Empress.
