The Alcone Sub 28 completes the Trio, a subwoofer with two - Alcone AC8 SW8, drivers with strong magnets for easy cone control. The cherry on the cake is the special tuning by Dr.-Ing. Peter Strassacker.
Review by Klang+Ton 1/2004: "Subwoofer/small satellite systems are designed for playing music like the big boys do. After placing the satellites on speaker stands and arranging the subwoofer somewhere in-between, this trio succeeds immediately in delivering a grown-up and conclusive performance of our music programme. The combination earns quite a few brownie-points by showing an immense commitment and great precision over the entire frequency range. The attention to detail is highly enthralling and it's an absolute pleasure to listen to a fiery sparkling brass section breathing freely into the room, and that without any unnatural edginess. Then a saxophone's sweet blowing attack and a briefly struck cymbal fading away slowly. The satellites' tonal structure is good, but not perfect. At times, slightly nasal female vocals tell us that this thrilling attack and the engaging dynamics have been paid for by a slight coloration and harshness. Everything is fine again when the listener is taken to the stalls where he / she can take pleasure from the trio's dance of joy and attention to detail. Finally, the integral performance of this small but eminently capable combination has to be commended. The subwoofer, seamlessly integrated, remains unobtrusive but performs with energy and delivers deep bass even beyond the normal listening volume. According to our experience the subwoofer should be placed, if possible, in-between the satellites; a centre placement, however, is not necessary. Then this slim trio will fulfil every wish for a superlative, musical reproduction, not only but also for the discerning listener."
Verdict "The Sub 28 is a congenial partner for the Langrange XT satellites, not only sound-wise but also from a price point of view. The trio appeals to enthusiasts who prefer tonal greatness to visual size. Sure, there are limitations at high volumes, but then this combination is not competing with party speakers, rather with audiophile 3 way floorstanders. At this point of view the triumvirate is very competitive."
