Cheap Trick CT 232 Floorstanding speaker with Visaton drivers as in Klang+Ton 5/07

CT 232 aus Zeitschrift K+T 5/2007
Technical data:
- size (HxWxD): 105 x 35.6 x 48 cm
- impedance: 6 Ohm
- sensitivity (2.83V/1m): 90 dB
- crossover frequency: 3 kHz
- frequency range (-8dB): 25-21 000 Hz
- speaker type: 2 way bass reflex
The CT 232 is a large bass reflex, floorstander with low bass extension. The components are similar to the CT 230 shelf speaker, comprising a modified Visaton BG 20 full range driver and a Visaton TW 6 NG cone tweeter. In contrast to the CT 230, the CT 232 was designed around a considerably larger cabinet, the crossover was altered only slightly.

According to Christian Gather the CT 232 is more grown up and a bit livelier; also the bass is more balanced and lower. Therefore, the preferred choice should be the CT 232, if space is no object.

The BG 20 is supplied by Visaton with a cone diffuser, a small funnel type attachment. Many full range drivers used to have this type of attachment in the past. For this kit the diffuser has to be carefully removed with a carpet knife.

Excerpt of the review in Klang+Ton 3/2007:
... in comparison to the CT 230: "The first bars showed already that the fundamental character of the speaker didn't change. Extremely fast and dynamic, almost like a horn, beautiful flow, an astonishing three dimensionality and a presence that gives you goose flesh, especially with vocals, are still the virtues of this design. At the first go, however, the new contestant shows - no surprise - a lot more bass. It's true that the performance of the CT 232 is a little lean compared to the somewhat fat sound coming from the rather too small CT 230. But the bass is certainly more realistic and noticeably lower. The BG 20 doesn't have any problem with the bigger cabinet, the bass is still tight and accurate at any time and power handling is not affected adversely. If you know the CT 230 well, you might notice some other differences. The new addition is a bit more forgiving and kinder in the upper mids and seems to be more natural and balanced. Also, the tops are less zippy. But to call this speaker boring would be an insult since the CT 232 is still miles ahead of conventional loudspeaker with regard to presence, liveliness and dynamics.
