A record player with a dynamic scanning system (currently the most common systems) requires an RIAA equalization preamplifier. This has the task of boosting the low tones compared to the mid and high tones. This is standardized for records (RIAA). Since there are different pickups, namely Moving Coil (MC) and Moving Magnet (MM), there are also different equalization amplifier characteristics for MC and MM. These differ essentially in their input voltage and input impedance.
