Daedalus-TL is a high transmission line floorstanding loudspeaker that employs a full range driver Visaton B200. This box has been developed by Bernd Timmermanns.
Daedalus, father of Icarus built a labyrinth for King Minios. The tall Daedalus TL floorstander contains a transmission line canal resembling a labyrinth.
The labyrinth style of the transmission line canal is similar to the Fuzzy Transmission Line in issue 2/2009 of Hobby HiFi.
The transmission line canal is quite long but still easy to build, since only rectangular boards (without mitre cuts) are required.
Drivers with a high Q at resonance are particularly suited for transmission line speakers.
To flatten the frequency response of the B200 full range driver a low pass is implemented, supplemented with absorption circuits in parallel to the B200.
As a result the frequency response on axis is quite linear for a full range driver.
"In our listening room it became immediately clear that the Daedalus TL is not suited for a large audience: the sound is very directional resulting in a small sweet spot with optimum sound requiring precise positioning for an optimum listening position. That’s obviously due to the large diaphragm. The strong directional properties are also evident in our lab results. Positioned correctly, however, the tall and slim loudspeakers reproduce an utterly fascinating sound. The sound is airy and easygoing, almost resembling electrostatic speakers. Tonal neutrality and balance are obviously mandatory for such a result; these criteria are measurable and may, therefore, be optimised. Nevertheless, it’s always a wonderful experience when this effort is rewarded by a sound that is perfectly detached from the speakers and just floats in the room naturally. In addition to these properties, significantly due to the exceptionally low mechanical Q factor (Thiele-Small parameters), the speakers shows astonishing dynamics and power handling. The large full range diaphragm pays off: there is no substitute for diaphragm size... The explosive Latin rhythms on "Something Grand" by the Hilton Ruiz Ensemble don’t expose any limitations, even at higher volumes. The electrifying beats are like continuos explosions and the bass guitar displays a range varying from slap to the lowest bass."
Kit without cabinet, price per speaker EUR 339,00 excl. VAT: € 284.87 / $ 310.51
The high-end kit comes with ClarityCap capacitors of type PWA. The inductances are baked varnished coils for minimizing microphonic effects. - The current flow through the coil creates a magnetic field which sets the reel of wire in motion. This motion induces a voltage in the coil which adds itself to the signal. The stiffer the reel of wire is, the less the signal will be altered.
Kit with high-end-crossover without cabinet, price per speaker EUR 408,00 excl. VAT: € 342.86 / $ 373.71
If you want to use a valve amplifier with this speaker an impedance correction should be employed. In this case the component quality is less important; therefore, we offer only one kit (upon request higher quality components are available).
If you prefer to mount the crossover components on a 240 x 165 mm universal PCB instead on wood: Universal PCB RA240, order no.. str-RA240, price per unit: EUR 8,60 excl. VAT: € 7.23 / $ 7.88 We recommend one board per kit (two boards for a speaker pair)
